Phil Free | Attorney

phil.free@okcIPLaw.com

(405) 446-8860

Phil has been in practice for over 25 years and his intellectual property law experience spans a wide array of technologies – electrical, chemical, and computer.  He handles patent disputes and trademark disputes, but he has also tried many offshoots of those types of IP cases.  For example, he has tried multiple trade secret and unfair competition cases, and Phil has the only reported trial decision involving the “right of publicity” in Oklahoma state court going back several decades.  His experience in IP law covers the gamut: copyright, domain name, false advertising, licensing and contract rights disputes, and he has handled these matters all over the country.

In counseling clients, Phil gives legal advice in straight-forward terms that make sense – it’s the same way he talks to judges and juries.  He can give “real world” guidance on complex legal issues, always keeping in mind what’s best and most cost-effective for the client, without the lawyer double-speak.  Phil routinely counsels clients on patent and trademark prosecution, including applications, opinions, searches, cease and desist letters, and licensing issues.  He manages the IP portfolios for a number of important clients, which include the acquisition, registration, maintenance and enforcement of the clients' IP rights.

Phil is ranked in “Band 1” by the Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers. He has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 2006 and in Super Lawyers since 2011, and is rated a Local Litigation Star by Benchmark Litigation. Phil is rated "AV Preeminent" by Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings. He is a Past-President of the Oklahoma Bar Association Intellectual Property Section.

Phil and his wife, Julie, have five children (Maggie, Peyton, Casey, Riley & Cade) and one son-in-law (Parker). Phil and Julie enjoy attending sporting events, relaxing by the pool or at the lake, and spending time with family and friends.
